Mercari is a site and app to sell things you don’t need anymore. It is a Japanese company that has expanded into the US and, as of May 2024, they have over 22 million active users.

“As a long-time Mercari user, I’ve both bought and sold kids toys, women’s clothing, unused beauty and make-up products, collectibles, homewares and even overstock and old inventory from my retail site on the platform,” says Tina Bar, an ecommerce coach and founder of Tina Bar Coaching. “The money you make isn’t going to be life-changing, but compared to running a garage sale, it is easy, fast and pretty fun with a large customer base of buyers looking for exactly what you are selling.”

All you have to do to sell your items on the site is post your item, snap photos on your phone, list the details, add some relevant hashtags and wait for buyers to reach out. As a seller, you have three days after something has been purchased to send it. Mercari charges a $2 processing fee for direct deposits and $3 for Instant Pay requests.

Poshmark

Use this app to sell unwanted items in your closet by uploading pictures and negotiating directly with buyers. Poshmark pays for the shipping and takes a small commission on everything you sell. It’s one of the easiest ways to clear your closet of extra clothes, shoes and accessories.

ThredUp

You may have purchased secondhand clothes from ThredUp before, but you can also sell your own on the platform. All you have to do is order a bag, fill it up, and send it back. The clothes need to be in good condition, free from stains, holes, and odors, and be undamaged and unaltered (meaning they must have the size label and no missing parts).

ThredUp inspects, photographs, and ships the items for you, so there’s really no work on your end either. If items don’t sell, you can reclaim them, or they will mark them down a bit to see if that helps move the process along.

Where To Sell My Devices Online

eBay

eBay is one of the best websites to sell devices, whether that’s cell phones, gaming consoles, televisions, tablets, headphones, or cameras. All you have to do is list your item, take photos, choose a purchase format, and set the price.

Once an item sells, eBay charges between 10 and 15 percent of the final value so you still get to keep a pretty big chunk of the profits.

If you’re a buyer, then it’s good to keep in mind that eBay has a program called eBay Refurbished, which means that the products being sold have been refurbished to 100 percent functionality by sellers or the manufacturer themselves.

Decluttr

Check out this option when you want to sell cell phones, tech, CDs, DVDs, games and books. Download this app and enter the details about the phone or computer you want to sell, or scan barcodes of old DVDs, CDs and games.

The key here is that Decluttr will pay you directly. They’ll tell you how much they’ll pay for all of your items, send you a shipping label, and then pay you within one day from when they receive your old tech. Oh, and they also delete any personal data you may have forgotten to remove from your devices. Using Decluttr may pay you less than what you could get on eBay, but it’s perfect if you’re low on time and just want to get rid of stuff from your cluttered, dusty home office.

Where To Sell My Books Online

Thriftbooks

If you have books you’ve either read or no longer need in your home, you might want to consider selling them. Bar recommends using ThriftBooks, which takes used books in good condition. If the book matches what they are looking for, they will buy it from you. “Simply look up the ISBN, list your book condition, and wait for the sale,” says Bar.

Aside from books, Thriftbooks also accepts DVDs and Blu-Rays, so if you have any old movies lying around that you don’t watch anymore, you can possibly make a few bucks off of them. They have an app that makes it easier to upload your titles, which is an added convenience.

Where To Sell My Auto Devices Online

NextDoor

NextDoor is becoming a favorite free method for people to sell their stuff to the local community. This is particularly beneficial if you wish to avoid the hassle of shipping or meeting someone far from your home or if you have items such as lawnmowers, barbecues, or other auto devices that would cost a lot to ship due to weight.

NextDoor is also a great way to get to know more neighbors! Just post a picture to the proper category, discuss with potential buyers over direct message, and negotiate the method of payment and where to pick it up. Many sellers like the convenience of neighbors picking up something from their homes, especially items like heavy furniture, but that’s up to you. Here are a few tips on where to sell furniture.

5Miles

5miles is a fun and easy way to buy and sell items and services from your phone. Snap a photo, enter a short description and begin selling to thousands of potential buyers within seconds.

5miles uses your phone’s GPS location to reach multiple buyers and sellers in your area. Making an offer is as quick and easy as sending a text message. It’s hard to overestimate the value of selling locally since postage and shipping costs may eat into your profit.

As an added bonus, 5Miles helps you find a safe meeting point for the exchange of merchandise and helps local service providers promote their small businesses. Whether you are trying to find a handyman, photographer, hair stylist, landscaper or more, 5miles can help you finding professionals in your area.

Where To Sell My Art Online

eBid

If you’re making a habit of selling your growing collection of antique store gems, then it might be worth using Amazon Marketplace or eBay. Those platforms require you to keep prices competitive because there are so many sellers, and you have to pay a fee to sell your items. eBid, on the other hand, asks no fee to list your items and only a small reduced fee (compared to eBay) at final sale. Its auctioning function plays to smaller markets than its larger competitors. But if you’re only interested in unloading surplus miscellaneous stuff occasionally, then this is the way to go.

Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace is a place for people to sell their items locally or have them shipped to the buyer. “When looking to sell larger items like garden and home products, think lawn mowers, framed art, mixers, vacuum cleaner, the best is to find local buyers who can pick up and that’s why Facebook Marketplace is great,” says Bar. “It’s an easy and fast alternative to a garage sale.”

To upload something on Facebook Marketplace, all you have to do is add a photo or video, enter information about the item (including the price) and click publish. This is recommended for local transactions as they don’t charge a fee and you can meet up in a public area to make the sale. If you decide to ship, then they take a five percent commission.

Craigslist

Unlike most other selling platforms, Craigslist is targeted to locals who want to sell items within a specific area. You can sell just about anything on Craigslist, including furniture, art, clothes, and household items.

The title is the first thing people will see when they see your posting so you want to make sure it is both catchy and descriptive. Adding pictures to your posting will make it more likely to catch the attention of people looking to buy too.

An added bonus is that Craigslist doesn’t take a portion of the sale either, so you’ll make the full amount that you listed.

OfferUp

OfferUp, a free service, allows you to buy and sell all your goods with the understanding that everything is negotiable. After messaging an interested buyer through the app, the seller arranges a time for the buyer to inspect the item, then pay the pre-discussed price or negotiate a different one. Your personal contact information is protected, and everyone is rated, à la Uber and Lyft, so you can feel safer meeting with a stranger (in a public place, of course).
